Iceland’s first beer spa opens in Arskogssandur

A new beer spa has opened up in Iceland, apparently the country’s first — as if people needed another reason to want to go to Iceland.

Bjorbodin Spa is located in the tiny remote village of Arskogssandur, home to the Kaldi brewery, located about 245 miles Northeast of Reykjavik.

The spa offers beer baths in tubs made of Kambala wood, of which there are seven in total. There are also two outdoor hot tubs.

You are not supposed to drink the bathwater, which (we think) includes seawater, but the tubs are equipped with beer taps.  There is no age limit for the beer bath because the bathwater is undrinkable. The taps are for those over age 20, and people under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.

The tubs are filled with beer, water, hops and yeast, and the baths are 25-minutes long, after which another 25 minutes is spent in a relaxation room. There is also a large outside area with a view over Hrisey island, mountains, and Porvalds valley.

According to the website, bathing in young beer and live beer yeast without showering it off until some hours later, “has an extremely powerful effect on the body and skin. This treatment is both cleansing for the skin and has a very positive effect on health.”

Bjorbodin also houses a restaurant that seats up to 75 guests and offers a variety of meals and “beer related food.”
